Vice-Governor presents the state's perspective on how local governments and the private sector can collaborate to implement changes across various sectors.
The initiatives of the Government of Minas Gerais for energy transition were discussed on Tuesday (5/12) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on the sixth day of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).
In the panel "What do we need to do to accelerate exponential change now?" Vice-Governor Professor Mateus, accompanied by the Secretary of State for Environment and Sustainable Development, Marília Melo, could reveal Minas Gerais' approach to adopting renewable energy in front of the so-called Climate Champions, chosen by the Development Goals (SDGs) to lead technical discussions on climate change.
"Minas Gerais has once again shown its way of developing the Climate Action Plan (Plac), launched last year and which has attracted much attention here at COP for bringing the private and public sectors to the same table for discussion, jointly establishing goals for zero carbon emissions by 2050," summarized Minas' Vice-Governor.
The discussion focused on energy alternatives in the city of Bogotá, Colombia, as well as companies like the car manufacturer Volvo and the Bezos Foundation, created for environmental preservation.
These were some of the entities that brought cases of changes, such as the expansion of solar and wind energy generation, and alternative fuel vehicles, listed as evidence of the exponential transformation occurring in the world.
The participants in the meeting then discussed how states, municipalities, and companies can enhance their actions towards decarbonizing the economy in the next two years and thus provoke a profound paradigm shift.
In Minas Gerais, the transition to the use of green fuels, such as ethanol and biogas, as defined in the Climate Action Plan, has been gradual, considering the state's potential for renewable energy generation, and the Government of Minas has taken on the coordination and mobilization of these projects with municipalities.
Developed with international support and active participation from civil society, the productive sector, and universities, the Climate Action Plan aims to guide the state's actions towards developing a low-carbon green economy capable of ensuring the necessary resilience to climate change and a more inclusive and sustainable society from a socio-environmental perspective for future generations.
The panel was part of the Implementation Laboratory "The power of demand signals and policy facilitators to accelerate exponential system transformations" and was hosted by the so-called Climate Champions, High-Level Leaders of the United Nations for Climate Change at COP28: the President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Razan Al Mubarak, and the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mahmoud Mohieldin, and the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action, a platform supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement, enabling collaboration between governments and cities, regions, companies, and investors that must act on climate change.
